It's Alive!

Posted in Uncategorized

Hello people!

So yes, I’m alive and kicking, still! Surprise, right? At least if you don’t follow me in social media, that is. If you just read this blog it would totally seem like I’ve quit on everything two years ago.

That might actually be sort of the truth, if I really think about it.

It wasn’t really that I quit writing on purpose. It’s just that my depression swept over me like the effing tsunami it can be, and I gradually realized I wasn’t writing anymore.

There have been several tries to write blog posts that had never got uploaded or even finished, thoughts on hosting a giveaway here and there (I think I did one some time ago, but that was on my Facebook.)

I’ve failed the whole “marketing myself” bit, and right now if you’re friends with me on Facebook, you mostly see puppy pictures, because I’m getting a new puppy in two weeks, yay! (FAIL. Promo wise. I know. Otherwise, quite cute.)

So what have I been up to lately? Or like, in the last two years when I’ve not posted here… Oops.

Well, there’s this short story I wrote last summer for Dreamspinner’s Daily Dose. It’s called Up to Boil, and it’s a May/December blue collar kind of thing. That’s literally the only thing I’ve had out there since Solitude. It did felt good to have something released out in the wild (from the constraints of my head, haha), though. So yay for that!

Right now I’m in the middle of trying to make a deadline for their States of Love submission call. The deadline is in a few days and I’m pretty sure I’ll make it. My state is Colorado, by the way, and it’s a story with a weird kind of structure, but more about that when it actually has a release date.

The really good news, though? I’ve signed a contract for a novel that’ll be out sometime in August/September. It’s a story about a “horse whisperer” who takes one last job to heal a horse, and ends up healing the rider, too. And maybe, possibly, they heal him a bit right back…? The theme of this story is largely about family, as my stories tend to, but another theme is depression. I hope I’m doing it justice, because it would suck to not be able to with the extensive “research” on the matter I’ve done most of my adult life. *insert wry laughter here*

So that’s about it, folks. Oh, and if you want a free copy of Up to Boil, message me on Facebook and I’ll see what I can do (for the first three people, at least. ;) )

What's Up?

Posted in Releases

That’s the question. Well, first of all, as many of you who might read this know, I suffer from depression that is always there. Depending on a number of things, sometimes extremely random ones, I can do pretty well for a time, then pretty damn unwell the next instant.

None of this is new to me. I’ve suffered from anything from “mild” to “not-quite-suicidal” depression for most of my adult life. That’s more than a decade now. There was a time, around 2006-2010 when I felt much better and at times considered myself depression free. I’m not sure if I was, if I’m completely honest, but I was better. That’s the keyword here. With how my mental health is, “better” is a thing to aspire to be. “Healed” or “depression free”… No, I don’t much believe in those.

All that said, the last year has been pretty rough on me. The last six months even more so. There have been times when I’ve been seriously scared of my condition and how it has ups and downs and random spin-arounds. But hey, I’m still here!

For me personally—and I assume this might go for lot of writers/creative people with depression—my mental health is very connected to my creative outlet. Writing, for me, is always the thing that makes me feel better. Worthy. Even good. But when I’m depressed, the joy of writing is sucked out and my creativity dwindles, and I feel more depressed because I’m not writing, and then I can’t write because I feel like crap…. Endless cycle. Endless.

This summer I had my medication adjusted. New things and old things are being tried out, to see if something would help. To add to my condition, I have (somewhat mild) ADHD. And issues with falling asleep. Both of those mean additional medication. For me, no depression medication has ever really helped long term. None. And I have tried probably over a dozen different ones over the years. This time we went back to basics and back to serotonin which is pretty much as basic as you can get. It’s never worked before.

This time, it seems to be working. A little. How do I know this? I have ideas. I’m writing a little bit. I feel creative bursts that were missing for months and months. I have stories fading in and out of my mind like I had last year when things were better.

So I’m writing. It might take time, but dear deity I’m writing. When my favorite season, autumn, arrives soon, I expect to feel much better anyway. I’m one of those weird people who get worse in springtime and better in the fall, instead the more usual other way around. Light, for me, is worse than darkness.

All that said, the Fifty Questions with Tia thing is on hold until I find a personal assistant who works for free books and virtual hugs and cookies OR when I feel “better enough” to do it more regularly again. It seems silly to post those sporadically when it’s a series.

For a lot of this year I was pretty sure I wouldn’t have anything but Mirage out. All year. But then I wrote Solitude with Anna Martin, and I wrote a little short story for an anthology over at Wilde City, and so there are two things that are out soon. There’s also the little freebie I wrote for the M/M Romance group’s event on Goodreads. There are stories out, just not so many. I’m trying to tell myself I haven’t failed and that I won’t. That I might just be getting better again. But we’ll see. Time will tell.

You can find Solitude here and the Bedtime Stories anthology here. I hope you enjoy them both.

Rainbows And Trout - New …

Posted in Releases

I’ve been sitting on this story for AGES. I wrote it for an anthology call which it didn’t make, and I was about to submit it somewhere else but I never came around to actually adding the needed extra words to submit it outside the anthology.

So here you go, my take on M/M romance with a side of more or less weird pets, reunions and the changes years bring us!

Rainbows And Trout, a short story on Smashwords. :)

Last week I was in the UK, in Brighton on the south coast, to be exact. I was there for some much needed vacationing, but also for the UK Meet. It was all so wonderful, although I still loathe flying and came back with a cold that made the plane ride back a bit of a bitch. My ears are still popping a few days later… ugh.

Brighton was marvellous. I’ve been in Hastings which is about one hour east from Brighton and much smaller, but everything else was pretty much as I remembered. I felt at home, somehow. I will definitely go back to Brighton at some point.

Meeting some of the authors I’ve admired and read for a couple of years now was great, as was the whole meet. Meeting or “meeting” as I didn’t get a chance to talk to most of them, people like Zahra Owens, Aleksandr Voinov, Sue Brown, Josephine Myles, Claire London and Jordan Castillo Price, just to mention few, was amazing! To think I was there, one author among others… mindblowing!

In case you’re reading this and you’re a friend of mine on Facebook, I posted 80 photos of the trip today. There are random shots of Brighton and plenty of photos from the Harry Potter Studio Tour as well. That tour in itself was a huge thing for both myself and my teenaged HP-fanatic sister. :) I really loved the place and all the things we saw there.

So what’s next? Well, I’m in the process of trying to tackle Finnshifters 3 now that I’m back home. At the moment I know I should try and write Technically Dead 2, but I may have to skip it for now. It just doesn’t inspire me… Ugh. The depression makes it impossible for me to write anything that doesn’t just flow naturally and since there’s another story in my mind, I may have to write it next instead.

There’s also a freebie short story coming out in the beginning of October. It’s called When I Say When and it’s based on a random idea and another idea I got from listening to too much Foo Fighters. Go figure. You can find the story from Dreamspinner Press’ website.

That’s about it for now. I’ll try to blog more in the future, promise!

Coming Soon - A freebie s…

Posted in Releases

Some time ago I wrote this little story that came to me very randomly. Then I spent weeks and weeks on trying to figure out what to do with it. Eventually I decided that I wanted to give it out for free. The smartest way to do that was to give it to my publisher, Dreamspinner Press, and let them offer it as a freebie on their schedule.

So there it is, on the Coming Soon page! In a bit less than a month, you can read a little story about misunderstandings, high school crushes, loving music and finding love in the unlikely places (in this case, after setting up an appointment with a prostitute…)

Hope you’ll like it!

News and stuff

Posted in Uncategorized

Damn I’m good with blog post headlines…

A few things: First of all, I’m in the process of editing one freebie short story (will be out at some point through Dreamspinner Press, I’ll keep you posted) and Finnshifters 2 that now has a brand new title!

Finnshifters 2 was supposed to be called, or rather its working title was, Moving On. Then another book named Moving On was released by DSP last month (I think) and I had to come up with a new name for FS2.

The new name is Tiglon by the Tail. I love the name and I wouldn’t have come up with it without some help from the editorial department, so thanks! Also, the release date is in September, which day, I don’t know yet.

Secondly, I’m going to start the process of having a new website done! It will be easier to update (thank you for everyone who hasn’t emailed me about the lack of updates on my current site…) and it will look really good, I bet. Can’t wait to see what AngstyG comes up with!

Thirdly, on August 4th, next Saturday, I’ll be hosting a Facebook chat on Dreamspinner’s Facebook page. Now, a bunch of stuff will be happening there, but there will be giveaways and even a paperback giveaway (signed and delivered to you wherever you live!) So keep an eye out!

Fourthly (this is getting silly…) in September, there will be an event in Brighton called UK GLBTQ Fiction Meet and I’ll be attending with plenty of other authors. So in case you’re in Brighton on September 15th, please do come meet us!

That’s about it for now!

I'm a wordy bitch, releas…

Posted in Uncategorized

For a while now, I’ve tried to find a home for two short stories of mine. I submitted them both to a certain publisher, because my usual publisher, Dreamspinner Press, doesn’t take short stories at the moment.

It turns out their house style clashes really badly with my writing style. While I know I’m wordy, oh so wordy, it’s how I write. The people who like my stories know this and they accept it. The publisher would have wanted me to make significant changes, which–especially with the shorter story–would have even changed the tone of the story.

There is such thing as artist’s integrity. I know that if I’d changed the stories and offered them to this publisher again, they would sell a lot better than if I’d self-publish them. But I just can’t do it. I can’t butcher the stories I love just to get the published. I have an active schedule, plenty of longer stories, novellas and novels, coming out this year. I don’t necessarily need these short stories to be published.

So I decided to self-publish them instead. I’ll let you know when I do. They won’t cost much, three or four bucks total, so don’t worry. ;)

Secondly, the first part of my shifter series, Finnshifters, will be released tomorrow! I’ll do a proper post tomorrow, and at some point soon I’ll tell more about the series at Sue Brown’s blog. The next two parts should come out this year too, so there will be plenty of these “cats and dogs” for you to love soon!

Third thing I thought I’d mention, is my next novel, Technically Dead, I’m editing right now. It’s set to be released in July-August, I don’t know the date yet. As the name suggests, it’s a vampire story. As I edit it, I keep getting to parts that make me remember why I loved to write this book last November.

There’s a soundtrack for the book, I’ll release it as a whole at some point when it’s been published. But the general main theme of the book is Lost In You by Three Days Grace. I’ll attach the video for an acoustic version of it below.

Until I ramble at you, in my usual wordy style, again, see ya!

A little update

Posted in Uncategorized

So, I’ve been writing and writing and reading and reading….aaand signing contracts!

I am happy to report that at the moment, the first half of 2012 brings you at least three stories by yours truly, all published by Dreamspinner Press.

One is a short story called Lucky. The genre is contemporary M/M, though one of the main characters is FtM transsexual.

Second one is called Something New, it’s a novella, and revolves around a YA writer called Frank, who makes decisions about his life and ends up moving, finding a new life and a new love (a hunky, younger fireman called Conner). This is essentially a family story.

Third one, which I call “that Twitter story” in my head, is another novella. It’s  the story of Matt, a bicycle messenger in London. He collides with a “rich guy’s Mercedes” and as a result ends up spending a lot of time online while he heals. On Twitter, he begins to stalk his favorite gay porn star aaand…the rest you have to read yourself. ;)

I’ll update when I have more news about current submissions and other stuffs.

I should be writing, but.…

Posted in Uncategorized

Okay, a proper status update is in order, I think. Not right now, but I was writing and my brain got shuffled like a deck of cards and here I am, updating my blog. Praise the ADHD.

Anyway. My first novel, By Any Other Name has been out for almost a month now. It’s doing really well, better than I expected, actually. So I’m quite happy. I know the issues the book has and some reader reviews have stated those, so I don’t really disagree with the “not-so-good” reviews this time.

I have two submissions in at Dreamspinner right at this moment. They’re both contemporary and I like both of the stories. Not too angsty, but still not too fluffy romance either. I like both of them and we’ll see if DSP picks them up or if someone else might.

There are two release dates you might want to know about. The first is a Halloween-story for Summerhouse publishing. It’s called Finding Eternity, and it’s a F/F-short story with vampires and blood and angst and all the good stuff. The release date is October 28th.

The second one is a short story with a trans-theme. It’s called Lucky and it will be published by Dreamspinner Press in January 2012. I’ll keep you posted for the exact date when I get it.

I’m working on a short story for one of the DSP’s anthology calls, who knows if it will end up there or not, but I’m working on it anyways. It’s about men and…trout. Don’t ask. ;)

There’s also another, longer story in my WIP-folder, it’s BDSMey and good, I hope. This story is on hold right now though. We’ll see when I get back to it.

Aaand then last but not least, I’m going for two new things soon-ish. One is a three story-series about shifters, and we’ll see about what happens with it. It would have M/M, F/F and M/F/M-stories in it.

The second new thing is my plans for this year’s NaNoWriMo. That one is a vampire story, very dark and angsty. At least that’s my plan for NaNo anyways. Who knows where the muses will go…

Oh, and on yet another piece of news, my swag is ready and will get to me at some point in the next few weeks I think. So then I’ll be sending them to some contest winners etc. And I might just hold another contest eventually. :)

That’s about it. Back to the writing now!
